The Moroccan city of Meknes, located in the northern central region, is one of the 4 major Imperial cities of the country. It was founded in the 11th century and became the capital of the country between 1672 and 1727 under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who transformed it into a Spanish-Moorish style city fortified by great walls and high wooden doors. Today the city remains the sixth most populated city in Morocco, with about 635,000 inhabitants, and it boasts its own racecourse where racing is administered by the Societe Royale d'Encouragement du Cheval.
